Yesterday, as part of activities to commemorate Environment Month 2026, WOMEN IN WATER SANITATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE (WWSCC), in collaboration with our valued partners, Tullow Ghana, MODEC, Zoomlion Ghana Ltd. K3 Limited, Baker Hughes, Harlequin International Ghana Limited, and Ghana Forestry Commission, successfully organized a student-led Tree Planting and Organic Gardening Activity at Accra Girls Senior High School in Accra. Guided by this year’s theme, “𝐌𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞,” the initiative brought together students, teachers, partners, and volunteers in a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action.
Despite the rains, participants demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm, determination, and resilience, turning the day into a truly impactful experience.
Together, we achieved:
1. Planting of 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 vegetable seedlings, including lettuce, cabbage, cucumber, okro, pepper, and tomato.
2. Planting of 𝟐𝟕𝟎 trees and fruit crops, comprising coconut, mango, orange, avocado, cashew, royal palm, and acacia.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the project, the Headmistress of Accra Girls Senior High School announced that the school’s Environmental Club will oversee the nurturing and maintenance of the garden and trees, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among students.
More than a tree planting exercise, this activity provided students with practical exposure to organic gardening, climate-smart agriculture, and environmental conservation. It also supports broader efforts to promote food security, agricultural entrepreneurship, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
At WWSCC, we believe that empowering young people with the knowledge and tools to care for the environment is one of the most effective ways to build resilient communities and create lasting change. We extend our sincere appreciation to our partners, the leadership of Accra Girls Senior High School, and all participants whose dedication made this climate action initiative a success.
Together, we are cultivating not only gardens and green spaces, but also the next generation of environmental leaders.
