On June 8th, 2024, Women in Water Sanitation and Climate Change (WIWSCC) celebrated World Environment Day with a tree planting exercise at Osu Manhean Basic School. Joined by Tullow Ghana Limited, Modec Production JV Limited, and the University of Ghana Oceans Governance Project, they planted 250 trees, 600 organic vegetables and 100 ornamental plants, inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards.
Sandra Kyere, Founder and Executive Director of WIWSCC, emphasized the importance of instilling environmental values in children, saying, “We aim to protect the environment and promote sustainability. Our ‘Project Learning Tree in Schools’ will educate and engage students in tree planting and care.”
Prof. Francis K. E. Nunoo, Board Chairman of WIWSCC and Coordinator of the Ocean Governance Project, highlighted the significance of trees in combating climate change, stating, “Trees release oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, and help restore degraded lands. By planting trees, we ensure a healthier environment for future generations.”
Lauren Darko, Environment Manager of Tullow Ghana, added, “We want to revive backyard gardens, beautify the environment, and teach children the value of nurturing plants and trees.”
The event’s success was evident, with 250 trees, 600 organic vegetables and 100 ornamental plants planted and a renewed sense of purpose among participants. WIWSCC continues to promote sustainable practices and protect the environment
