Prof. F. K. E. Nunoo is a Professor of Fisheries Science at the Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences at the University of Ghana (UG). He is the current Chairman of the Governing Board of the Fisheries Commission, in Ghana. He is also a former member of the Governing Council of the Catholic University at Fiapre, near Sunyani. Prof. Nunoo is a past Chief Director of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Ghana. He is currently a country expert for the Specialised Committee on Fisheries Resources for the Gulf of Guinea Commission. He is an astute Fisheries Scientist and Coastal Management expert with broad expertise covering environmental, social and natural resource governance issues in Ghana, Africa, and globally.

Prof. Nunoo has a plethora of knowledge and has  distinguished himself in academia, capacity building, university administration, policy support and advocacy. His key principles and personality attributes in management are integrity, hard work, result-oriented, bold, proactive, strategic, down to earth, and being responsive in decision making.

He had his undergraduate education at the University of Ghana where he graduated in 1992 with a BSc. degree in Zoology with Botany. Prof. Nunoo studied at the University of Newcastle, UK, for both his MSc. in Tropical Coastal Management and M.Phil. in Marine Sciences & Coastal
Management in 1995 and 1997 respectively. In 1998, he enrolled for doctoral studies at the University of Ghana which enabled him to participate in an international student exchange programme at the North Carolina State University, USA. He successfully graduated with a Ph.D.
in Fisheries Science at the University of Ghana in 2003. In addition to the Ph.D., he holds a postgraduate diploma in Benthic Ecology from the University of Bremen; and a certificate in Tugmate (Coastal Navigation) from the Regional Maritime University (then Regional Maritime Academy). Prof. Nunoo has participated in several training programmes including a certificate programme in fish otolith microstructure analysis for ageing at the Port Erin Marine Biological Station of the University of Liverpool in the Isle of Man, UK.

Prof. Nunoo started his career as a Trainee Tugmate at the Marine Section of the Tema port of the Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority in 1988. He then worked in the Department of Oceanography & Fisheries (now Department of Marine & Fisheries Sciences) of the University of Ghana as a Senior Research Assistant and was later promoted to the rank of Principal Research Assistant. He was appointed Lecturer in the same department in 1999 and has since risen to the rank of Associate Professor. He has contributed immensely to the growth of the Department of Marine & Fisheries Sciences of the University of Ghana and was Head of Department between 2009 and 2011. He was also a Part-time Lecturer in Fish Biology at the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, in 2007/2008 academic year.

Prof. Nunoo is a natural leader and has extensive senior level management experience both in academia and public service. For over twenty-five years he has served the University of Ghana on many statutory and non-statutory boards and committees. Prof. Nunoo was the Vice President of UTAG Legon; and the first Chairman of the Legon UTAG Health Club between 2005 and 2007. Prof. Nunoo served as the first Hall Master of the Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall at UG from 2011 to 2014. In the 2015/2016 academic year he was simultaneously the Head of Department of 2 Fisheries and Water Resources; Dean, School of Natural Resources; and Ag. Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at University of Energy & Natural Resources (UENR) at Sunyani, Ghana. Between 2014 and 2016 he served UENR on several statutory and non-statutory boards and committees.

Prof. Nunoo’s areas of specialization are Fisheries Science and Coastal Zone Management. His major areas in Fisheries science are Biology, Ecology and Management. His specific research interests in fisheries include fish processing and utilization, studies on impacts of ocean
acidification on fisheries, improving data collection in African fisheries, impact of by-catch, discards and trash fish trade on fish stocks, poverty in small-scale fisheries, aspects of fish culture, aspects of biology of important commercial species, and fisheries-bird interactions. He is also an Environmental Impact Assessment practitioner who has worked with several teams on national and international projects. He has international collaborations with various universities and research institutions worldwide and is a member of professional associations in his specialized
area such as Snappers, Seabreams Grunts Specialist Group and Sciaenid Species Specialist Group (both under IUCN), Society for Conservation Biology, Afri-FishNet, Pan African Fish, and Fisheries Association, and the Ghana Science Association. Further Prof. Nunoo is also a trained
and certified Rainforest Alliance Forest Auditor; as well as an Assessor for IUCN Redlist for marine bony fish species.

Prof. Nunoo was the External Examiner for the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management of the University of Development Studies in Tamale, Ghana from 2012 to 2015. He has also served as External Examiner for the University of Bremen in Germany in 2020; University
of Abomey Calavi, Benin, in 2017; Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Malawi, in 2013; and University of Malawi in 2011; as well as for the University of Cape Coast and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi in Ghana. He was a regular
annual Visiting Lecturer at the University of Lome in Togo between 2014 and 2017. He has also served as External Assessor of publications in his specialisation for promotions of academic senior members from four public universities in Ghana; the University of Lagos in Nigeria; and University of Namibia, Namibia.

Prof. Nunoo has over one hundred and thirty publications made up of eighty-seven (87) refereed articles in both international and local journals, five (5) technical books, seventeen (17) edited book chapters and conference proceedings, two (2) contributions to books, three (3) training manuals, and many national and international reports. He has, to date, successfully supervised 11 Ph.D., 31 M.Phil. and many BSc. students; as well as mentored about ten lecturers in various universities in Ghana, including UG, UEW, UDS, and UENR. Additionally, Prof. Nunoo is a reviewer for several local and international journals. He also enjoys creating coastal environmental awareness among school children, coastal fishing communities and non-governmental organizations. He has participated in several international and national conferences and workshops where he delivered papers; Prof. Nunoo has led or been a member of several national delegations to international fisheries and biodiversity meetings. He has either chaired or been a member of national committees such as the Fish Landing Sites Committee of MOFAD; and the National Biodiversity Steering Committee. He has provided professional
3 services to aid development efforts of Africa and the world through short-term contracts with international agencies such as the World Bank, Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the UN, IUCN, ECOWAS, NEPAD, USAID, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the COMMAFAT/ATLAFCO. He is a member of the IUCN Expert Assessment Group for Green List for protected areas (EAGL).

Finally, Prof. Nunoo is a sociable, affable, bold, decisive, and disciplined person. He pursues with diligence and passion his professional activities which include teaching, research, mentoring staff and students, consulting, and environmental advocacy. He is an Evangelist of The Methodist Church, Ghana; and is married with four children. Having a lively personality, music, dance, artistic impressions, and drama excite him a lot as a person; and he enjoys cooking and eating fishy meals
