🌿 Greening the Future, The Role of Students! 🌍
Last week Saturday, WOMEN IN WATER SANITATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE (WWSCC), in collaboration with our committed partners Tullow Ghana Halliburton Baker Hughes Harlequin International Ghana Limited and Forestry Commission successfully held a transformative Tree Planting and Organic Gardening Activity at Accra High School.
Held in commemoration of World Environment Month, the event kicked off with insightful opening remarks from Prof. Francis K. E. Nunoo, Board Chair of WWSCC. He highlighted the importance of sustainability and encouraged the school’s Environmental Club to take leadership in nurturing the crops and promoting environmental awareness within the school community.
With strong support from the headmistress, staff, and students, the day saw impressive participation and action:
🍅𝟏,𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐯𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝, including cucumber, okra, groundnuts, garden eggs, pepper, and tomato
🥭 𝟓𝟎 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝: coconut, mango, and orange
🌳 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐲/𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 to provide long-term greenery and climate resilience
🌺 𝟓𝟎 𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 added to enhance the school’s aesthetics
🌱 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 distributed to students and staff for individual planting at home or in their communities
To ensure sustainability, systems have been put in place to support the growth of these plants, including the engagement of the school’s Environmental Club to lead routine care and environmental campaigns throughout the academic year. This initiative not only promotes green spaces in schools but also provides students with hands-on knowledge in organic gardening, environmental protection, and climate-smart agriculture.
🙏🏽 Thank you to all our partners, school leadership, and participants for making this vision a reality. We are especially grateful to Kevin Burke of Tullow Oil for his continued support for the initiatives of the WWSCC in advancing environmental sustainability locally and globally. Together, we are building a generation that values and protects our environment.
